Here
are some frequently asked questions
about the work I do as a liturgical design consultant:
Q. What is a liturgical design consultant?
A.
According to the U.S. Catholic Bishops’ document, Built
of Living Stones: Art, Architecture and Worship, a liturgical
design consultant assists “the pastor, the staff, and the
entire parish with continuing education about the importance,
role, and value of worship, and the impact of the church building
upon worship.”
Also, the
liturgical design consultant “selected by the parish, works
with the architect and other members of the design team from the
earliest stages of the process to help them apply the principles
and norms of liturgical design to the practical and liturgical
needs of the parish being served. This includes examining the
acoustics, the flow and movement for processions, appropriate
styles for liturgical celebrations, the interrelationships within
the Eucharist as well as the relationship of the Eucharist with
the other sacraments, and all the elements required by the Church's
liturgy. In addition, the consultant may have expertise in design
and can help to coordinate the design and fabrication of appropriate
furniture and other objects to be used during liturgical services,
as well as the liturgical art to be placed within the church.”
Q.
What are my qualifications?
A.
My name is Martin
Kleiber, I am a certified liturgical design consultant,
holding a certificate from the Institute for Liturgical Consultants
at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. I have been a licensed
architect for more than twenty years, including several years
with an architectural firm specializing in the design of Catholic
churches in the Chicago area
Q. What services will I provide St. Andrews parish?
A.
I am currently working or may be working with your parish in these
ways:

Facilitating a Town Hall meeting to revisit and affirm your
parish Master Plan Project Mission Narrative in order to properly
communicate the parish’s values and goals for this project
to the design team.
•

understanding of the purpose and function of liturgical and
ritual spaces, furnishings and art.
•
By means of bulletin inserts and pulpit messages, helping to
•
Providing ongoing guidance and assistance to the Building Committee
and other members of the Master Plan Committee during the design
and construction phases, including review of construction documents
for conformance with parish objectives.
•
Designing liturgical furnishings as requested, including altar,
ambo, baptismal font, etc.
Q. What do you want the people of St. Andrews parish to
know about you and your work?
A.
The space, the art and the furnishings in a church building are
all means to an end. The end of these things is worship that glorifies
God and gathers a people in every generation to serve God in the
name of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
Before and
while contributing to the design of the space, I help each worship
community with whom I work to bring their own vision of themselves
and their worship into focus, so that the space, art and furnishings
that evolve truly belong to them and are expressions of their
unique giftedness.
