DOWL
was established in Anchorage in 1962 as Dickinson -Oswald &
Associates by Lewis E. Dickinson, a civil engineer specializing
in design engineering and urban planning, and Maurice P. Oswald,
a land surveyor and U.S. Mineral Surveyor.
Their
emphasis was in residential subdivision platting, planning and surveying,
and design of water and sewer utilities. In 1973, they enhanced
the firm's expertise in geotechnical engineering through a merger
with Alaska Testlab, a commercial geotechnical and materials testing
laboratory. Alaska Testlab became a subsidiary of the engineering
partnership, which became known as DOWL
Engineers.
DOWL
expanded further in 1988 by opening an office in Redmond, Washington,
to work more closely with clients and associates in the Pacific Northwest.
In
1996, NANA Development Corporation and DOWL
Engineers formed a partnership to provide civil engineering
and related services in rural Alaska. As the partnership matured
and revenues grew to more than $3.0 million, NANA and DOWL
deepened their relationship. Early in 1999, NANA purchased 51 percent
of the outstanding interest in DOWL
and assumed the role of majority owner of a $21 million engineering
company with offices in Anchorage and Kodiak, Alaska and Redmond,
Washington.
In
2002, DOWL
opened its Tucson, AZ office to serve its project interests in the
Soutwest.
Along
the way, we have earned a few awards.
